Thomas Jefferson

 
 

Thomas Jefferson, author of the declaration of independence, was born on April 13th 1743 in Albermarle County, Virginia and died July 4th 1826.  He was the 3rd president of the United States of America, and founded the prestigious University of Virginia.

 

Thomas inherited around 5,000 acres of land from his father, who was a planter and surveryor, and also enjoyed high social standing.  Thomas Jefferson attended the College of William and Mary, and studied law.  Thomas Jefferson married Martha Wayles Skelton, who was a widow, and they lived in Monticello.

 

Thomas Jefferson was not noted for his public speaking capabilities, rather he was known as the “silent member” of congress, and contributed to the patriot cause with his pen rather than his voice.  Jefferson was 33 years old when he drafted the declaration of independence, he also wrote a famous bill which established freedom of religion which was enacted in 1786.

 

Thomas Jefferson served as President of the United States from March 4th 1801 to March 4th 1809.  Some of his most notable achievements during his presidency include the lousiana purchase from France in 1803 for 15 million dollars.  Jefferson was succeeded as president by James Madison.
