The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776 declaring independence from Great Britain. The document was written by Thomas Jefferson in only 17 days, during the second continental congress. The Declaration of Independence was not actually signed until August 1st, 1776, it was approved on July 4. We celebrate July 4th every year, celebrating the Declaration of Independence and The United States as a free and independent nation - Independence Day.
You can view the declaration of independence here at the National Archives, a great site for history and history buffs.
